We’re excited to announce a new project from Late Night Copies Press—a community print shop called Workshop for Independent Publishing (WIP) opening in January 2025.
We’ve gotten to know our local publishing ecosystem through opening our home print shop to friends and strangers for “Open Copy.” There are a variety of ways to get a short run publication printed in the Twin Cities, but we see a tangible need for a publishing-focused space that can host workshops. While it’s true that independent publishing often functions on the margins with a minimum of resources, we recognize a need for reliable access to printing and binding equipment, in a space that is artist friendly and dedicated to the activity of publishing. While we take a broad view of publishing, we expect WIP to be especially useful to people making zines, chapbooks, comics, pamphlets, and artist publications.
The mission of WIP is to promote independent publishing as an artistic process and information practice by:
Providing affordable copies and printing
Maintaining tools and space to learn and teach DIY publishing skills
Serving as venue for artists to host publishing events, like readings and workshops
Offering a zine library for teaching and research
Thanks to our friends Yarborough Print Shop, Kuya Print Co, and Cool Trash, we are renting a space at 900 West 50th St. in Minneapolis. The 50th St. building is more physically accessible than our apartment print shop (no steps). It’s challenging to find incubator space in the Twin Cities and we’re grateful that fellow artists are making it feasible for us. We plan to open our doors sometime in January 2025.
We see WIP as an experiment—it’ll take time, trial and error, and user input to build a DIY publishing hub. We’re excited to welcome you to a work in progress.
