As most of you may know, I do a large majority of the rescues puppies that come down with parvo…. To the point where local animal control will alert me if they have a dog in their care who has it. Before 2024 I had cared for dozens and had a “perfect record” I had not lost a single one. But … this year I lost 2. Two perfect puppies who deserved the world and I was not able to give it to them. My first lost was an American bully puppy named fingerling. Her and her 3 siblings were all left at animal control when they got sick. They were there with their parents, their parents were reclaimed so they could breed again. So four sick puppies remained in a cold shelter. Fingerling was ok for a couple days and then in a matter of hours she went from alert, eating and drinking…. To dying in my arms in front of a warm fireplace. My heart broke into a million pieces. Even reliving that moment as I type it… my heart hurts. The next puppy I lost, he was a Chihuahua puppy named Shadow. When I first met him, I had to check to see if he still had a heartbeat. But he did, he was almost gone already. I rushed him home, put him on a heating pad, put a heater in my bathroom, gave him fluids, medicine, everything I could do. Shadow was only with me about 8 hours before he crossed that rainbow bridge and again, my heart shattered. That sweet boy didn’t deserve an ending like that.
This is the sad truth about Parvo and it’s so preventable. These dogs are let down by humans, and the rescue and I are left to pick up the pieces.
At the end of 2023 I had to put down the best parvo nurse there was. She would literally bully these sick puppies into feeling better so they could play with her. Elsa was the tool that made me so successful. So losing my first couple puppies this year after she left made it sting a little more. But I know she met them over that rainbow bridge and bullied them (in the best way) as soon as they stepped through those gates.
Parvo isn’t cheap to care for. While I may have lost 2, so many lives were saved! It’s worth it ❤️ please consider donating so I can continue to give my all to these dogs. Whether it is to break my heart or not… It gives them the best chance to live their best life.
