Dear Friends and Supporters,
I am thrilled to introduce Elayna Waxse Movement Project (EWMP), founded in 2024, as we prepare for our inaugural performance, Creatures of Loss, at the Southern Theater on March 14-16, 2025. This piece has emerged from a deep, physical exploration of grief and loss. It features original compositions by Joe Strachan and Gabriel Rodreick (“Freaque”) along with immersive media design by Jason Brickman, a collaborator I had the privilege of meeting at Jacob’s Pillow Choreotech Lab: Immersive Dancemaking with AI & AR. Rehearsals have begun with our inspiring cast of dancers—Nieya Amezquita, Romero Cannady, Colin Edwards, Sarah McCullough, and Laura Osterhaus Rosenstone.
Creatures of Loss weaves personal narrative, cultural insights, and the neuroscience of grief into an exploration that feels especially resonant for me, as someone navigating my own significant losses and as a mental health therapist who has supported others through bereavement with evidence-based techniques.
This piece lies at the heart of EWMP, reflecting a deep fascination with people—their stories, relationships, patterns, and cultural connections. The principles of EWMP are based in my work in contemporary dance and mental health, and include:
- Creative Approach: Cultivating a physical language based in storytelling, emotional attunement, and risk-taking.
- Artistic Environment: Creating spaces of empathy, compassion, and witnessing in which artists feel empowered to bring their full history and identity to the work.
- Social Commitment: Committed to justice and equity through socially-conscious processes.
Elayna Waxse Movement Project cultivates an inclusive environment where contemporary dance can thrive, championing the emotional and financial well-being of each artist. With your support, you can help us make this vision possible.
Join the Movement and become an inaugural donor today, directly supporting a project that aims to reshape the working conditions of the concert dance world, creating space for artists to deeply inspire, connect, and move audiences.
Thank you for believing in the future of EWMP and for making our debut possible.
With gratitude,
Elayna
