CENTERPLAY is a one woman dance theater show that happens in the round. It uses song, dance, spoken word poetry and monologues to acknowledge and elevate the complex, multilayered emotional experiences of Black women. This piece was set to premiere at The Guthrie in the Dowling Studio in March of 2020. It was cancelled due to COVID- 19.
We are raising $20,000 to cover production costs to transition this work from a live theater experience to film.
We anticipated the live show serving 1,100 patrons over 6 performances. Each show was supposed to feature a talk back session lead by Vie with a special guests from the community. The community development component featured yoga and discussion workshops with organizations that serve women of color in the Twin Cities with a focus on Black women.
Now that the piece is moving to a digital platform the reach of this piece has increased exponentially since Vie has performed and taught abroad. Now, her audiences in Paris, London and Casablanca, Morocco will have the chance to see her latest work.
