It’s a new era at the M. With dedicated support in recent years, the M has walked boldly through a phase of vibrant growth, solidifying St. Paul’s only art museum forever as a vital arts anchor for St. Paul and the region. The completion of the museum’s New Wing, open on October 17, 2024, ensures its creative energy is a permanent fixture in the heart of city. The New Wing opens with Here, Now: Selections from the M’s Permanent Collection, which features 150 artworks that tell the story of the M’s significant permanent collection––its integrity, its beauty, and its lastingness over decades.  

Opening the New Wing marks the realization of a long-held dream, and its now time for us to turn the page from building to sustaining this great museum. As the M physically grows in space, it is critical that the museum continues to enhance operational systems that are essential as we settle into our newly tripled space. 

Today, the M remains committed to its collaborative curatorial model that prioritizes community voices. In this way, the M enters into co-creation with artists and culture bearers who have strong relationships with the region and who have been historically—and presently are—excluded from many American art museums. The M has found profound success and continues to hone this model.  

With your support the M will continue to... 

1. Sustain and deepen our accessible model, which is funded solely by philanthropy. At the core of our accessible model is to offer a museum that is completely free. This means the M does not receive income from ticket sales but is solely funded through philanthropy, a greater challenge in the current economic landscape.   
2. Expand the M’s influence along with our footprint. With the opening of the New Wing, the M has tripled its gallery space, growing from 2,000 to 6,000 square feet. We see incredible potential to expand our influence along with our footprint—hosting more community conversations, providing a space for artists to collaborate, and helping to share our work more broadly with our neighbors across the region.  
3. Strengthen Lowertown and downtown St. Paul. The M dreams of continuing to grow our role in helping to heal and revitalize Lowertown and downtown St. Paul as a capital city through creative placemaking. This includes mural projects, public art, and the educational opportunities that come with these priorities.
