It’s a new era at the M. With dedicated support in recent years, the M has walked boldly through a phase of vibrant growth that has changed St. Paul’s only art museum forever. Today, we’ve reached a milestone—opening the New Wing, which triples the M’s gallery space and promises to shape the future of art in St. Paul and beyond!
This month, Here, Now opened in the M’s New Wing. This exhibition features 150 artworks that tell the story of the M’s significant permanent collection––its integrity, its beauty, and its lastingness over decades. Alongside pieces of historical significance from the collection, Here, Now showcases exciting recent acquisitions, guided by the M’s mission to consider less frequently represented American identities. Here, Now delves into the rich tapestry of kinship systems and artistic interconnections and includes visionary artists like Jim Denomie, Pao Houa Her, Joan Mitchell, George Morrison (Grand Portage, Ojibwe), and Louise Nevelson.
Completing the New Wing allows the M to not only grow in exhibition space, but in impact, too. Amplifying the M’s impact looks like hosting more community conversations, providing a space for artists to collaborate, and helping to share the M’s permanent collection more broadly with our neighbors across the region. Furthermore, the M’s innovative partnership model of collaborative co-curation prioritizes long-lasting relational work over transactional models. We’re not just growing—we’re reshaping the landscape of art museums from right here in Minnesota.
The M is dedicated to keeping art accessible to everyone by maintaining free admission. Your generous support can help us continue this vital mission. Every contribution ensures that the M remains a welcoming space where thousands of annual visitors can experience the transformative power of art.
Thank you for championing the arts and supporting the Minnesota Museum of American Art. With your support, the M continues to make certain that art remains accessible and relevant to everyone. Visit https://mmaa.org/ to learn more.
"What's exciting about the M is that it is a regional museum that has an international impact. This is demonstrated by the M's interactions and engagement with communities. This is also demonstrated in the M's incredible collection."
—Dr. Patricia Marroquin Norby (Purépacha), Associate Curator of Native American Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art
"I’m excited about the way the M is helping us shape, craft, and build our stories together as a community. Because our story is the most powerful thing that we have. Our story is what helps us survive this moment, no matter what this moment brings."
