Short clip of Lizzy drinking water and her difficulty ingesting it and breathing.

Update posted 5 years ago

Lizzy is a 2 year old French Bulldog who was surrendered by her owners; “Lizzie has had a rough medical life so far. she had a major Elongated Soft Palate surgery do to not being able to eat drink or breath properly roughly 6 months ago. her breathing and eating has gotten better but she can not drink water properly. Also she has a protein deficiency and is required to have special food to help retain protein.”  They just couldn't care for Lizzy's extensive medical needs.

When Lizzy and her dad came to MARS, he revealed that we were Lizzy’s last possibility.  Every other rescue said no or wanted thousands of dollars before they would agree to take her.  Lizzy was set to be euthanized.  Why?  Because she couldn’t eat or drink without vomiting.

Lizzy was immediately started on a veterinary prescription food with a single source protein that is already broken down making it easier to digest.  When she entered rescue, she looked like a concentration camp survivor.  She was simply a tiny bag of bones.  Since starting the new food, and learning to take a breathing break once in awhile, she is gaining weight, her stools have formed and she feels better!  She’s turned into “Bizzy Lizzy” because there is so much to do now that she feels so much better.

With one issue resolved, there still remained her inability to consume water without vomiting and her difficulty breathing.

Under a surgical sedative, an endotracheal tube was placed and under oxygen to prevent respiratory distress, our veterinarian was able to take a close look at the inside of Lizzy’s throat and was shocked at what she found!  Her soft palate - the one that already was surgically shortened just months before - was still nearly 3” too long!

Lizzy’s next step is another Elongated Soft Palate surgery but sadly, we are forced to do it with an outside veterinarian in their clinic and near retail prices because the soft palate can be a very bloody surgery.  A surgical laser helps control bleeding, significantly reduces the chance of infection and will be far more gentle on the tissue vs a traditional scalpel.

Once she undergoes this surgical procedure, Lizzy has a chance at a normal dog life!  A life with eating and drinking without vomiting and without constantly struggling to breath!

Your donation helps us get one step closer to purchasing the surgical laser and one step closer to being able to address nearly ALL medical needs a rescue or community dog might have.
