At Main Street Family Services, we believe that when families are healthy, children thrive. When families become isolated and struggle to access basic needs, children are at risk for abuse and neglect. Main Street is asking you to join us in eliminating child abuse and neglect, creating a future where Every Family Flourishes, and every child experiences a safe, loving, nurturing home. Thats why in 2025 we are adding to our services and opening a Family Resource Center in Elk River and Big Lake! Join our 2025 Every Family Flourishes Campaign!
At the Family Resource Center, we are dedicated to providing concrete support, information, referrals, advocacy, and assistance to our neighbors. Our goal is to help create stability for families by helping families connect with community resources like schools, other local non-profit services, community partners, corporate and government agencies, and faith communities. We help our neighbors meet their basic needs and provide skills and resources to achieve self-sufficiency. Together, we want a stronger, healthier, and connected community where Every Family Flourishes.
Here is a common story from the perspective of one of our team members. This is a story about a little girl named Katie. Katie was five years old when child protective services removed her from the care of her mother - Amanda. While Katie was living in foster care, she visited her mother once a week for two hours at our Main Street office in a supervised visit. During the first visits, Katie showed a lot of stress, she rarely sat still and ran around the room often acting silly and dysregulated, occasionally clinging to my leg. I truly did not believe that this family would be reunified. I shared my concerns with my supervisor. She told me that we cannot predict the outcomes of walking alongside families through their darkest times, sometimes people surprise us. She encouraged me that I just may witness a miracle. So faithfully we met weekly and little by little, things did change. I learned more and more of Amanda's story, and it broke my heart. Amanda was a victim of domestic violence; she was homeless and struggling with her mental health and addiction. Amanda loved Katie but she had to overcome so many obstacles, she needed a lot of very practical help and support. Over time I watched Amanda began to heal, and Katie began to feel safe. The love and joy they had spending time together grew better and better! I can only describe it as I was watching a miracle unfold before my eyes. I watched Amanda break free from the drugs, I saw her mental health improve, and she left the unhealthy relationships. She found stable housing and a job. It wasn’t an easy road, but her relentless determination turned the tide. I had the privilege of walking with her through tears, laughter, setbacks, and victories. With Amanda's commitment to change, and supportive guidance, she was reunified with Katie. Recently Amanda and Katie stopped by Main Street Family Services. Amanda was beaming from ear to ear as she shared that she and Katie were doing well! They had a home, Amanda was working, Katie was in school and flourishing, and they were so thankful for all the support they had a Main Street! I learned an amazing lesson, even the most broken families can heal. What an honor it has been to see this process with countless families over the years. That is why I am still here at Main Street, 8 years later, still walking with families helping them navigate challenges, find resources, and watching miracles happen. This is the best and hardest job you can have! I am so blessed to know these courageous people and to walk with them as they heal.
