When Maxwell was found abandoned, he was in a heartbreaking state of despair—a sight all too familiar in rescue.
This sweet 8-year-old boy was emaciated, with open flesh wounds and painful pressure sores on his hips. His feet were raw, covered in oozing sores, and his nails were severely overgrown. It was clear he had been neglected for a long time, likely confined to a small space where he could neither move nor receive proper care.
Maxwell was brought to the impound, where he spent 10 days on medical hold. Despite his severe condition, no medical cause could be found for his deteriorated state, leaving neglect as the only explanation.
As the impound began seeking rescue, a Ruff Start foster saw Maxwell's post and felt an immediate connection. There was no doubt in her mind—Maxwell was meant to be her next foster. She picked him up that same day, and even after everything he’d been through, Maxwell greeted her with the sweetest, most loving demeanor, approaching her with a wagging tail and an affectionate hello.
Maxwell was diagnosed with a UTI, back pain, skin allergies, pressure sores, and chronic wounds on his feet caused by the lack of webbing between his toes. He also suffers from severe separation anxiety. His treatment plan included medications for pain, inflammation, and infection, as well as ongoing care for his emotional well-being.
Maxwell’s journey to recovery has been a slow, but steady process. Weak and wobbly at first, he cried from pain as he struggled to get up. But over time, as the steroids helped him heal, Maxwell began to show signs of comfort and relief. His cries turned into happy barks and little whines of joy, and his sweet pit bull personality began to shine through.
As his strength returned, Maxwell’s true nature emerged—loyal, loving, and endlessly affectionate. He quickly bonded with his foster family, greeting friends with a wagging tail and an adorable submissive grin. He has an undeniable desire to be close to his people at all times. Maxwell loves car rides, belly rubs, and has claimed the couch as his own special spot. He’s even started to play with toys and show interest in playing with his foster sister.
While Maxwell’s recovery continues, he’s made incredible progress. His wounds are healing, his strength is returning, and he’s slowly gaining weight. His foster family has fallen completely in love with him and can’t imagine life without him. His resilience, sweetness, and loving nature have made it clear—Maxwell is home. His foster family has chosen to foster to adopt him, and they look forward to spending many happy years together. ❤️
