When parents don’t have the support they need, families break apart and children suffer. If the child welfare system gets involved, children can suddenly lose everything they know and love like parents, siblings, friends, teachers, pets, sports, and more. Loss and trauma increase family stress which can lead to kids bouncing from home to home and facing the world all alone when they turn 18.
No one is meant to face the hardships of life alone, and that is where Families Rising steps in. Initially founded to provide nationally known support groups and skills building trainings that keep families together, today we also address other factors that stand in the way of children having a permanent, loving family for life such as:
- Helping youth learn about adoption and other available options and speak up about what they want.
- Reducing child trauma by fighting for resources (like financial payments for adoptive families) that keep them close to the people and communities who love them.
- Sharing our personal experiences to help the child welfare workforce understand the negative effects of certain practices and decisions.
- Providing leadership coaching across the nation to increase diversity in child welfare to make sure that decisions are fair for all, especially youth and people of color who are underrepresented.
Despite our successes, there are hundreds of thousands of children, families, and professionals that we cannot currently reach, and we need your help. Will you help us reduce childhood trauma by sponsoring training for family members or social workers? If 30 new partners give a small monthly gift, we can train more than 100 additional people.
Research proves that children who lose family continue to suffer for life such as experiencing job and housing instability, mental and physical health problems, and being subject to long-term violence. Together we can make sure that children, families, and communities can thrive.
