“Education means emancipation. It means light and liberty. It means the uplifting of the soul of man into the glorious light of truth, the light by which men can only be made free.”  – Frederick Douglass (1894)

Literacy is not just about reading and writing...

It’s about agency, voice, and active participation in our communities. Literacy Minnesota, believes in the transformative power of civic literacy—the skills and knowledge that allow individuals to engage confidently in their communities, understand their rights, and advocate for meaningful change.

That’s why, despite being a sprinter, I have committed to running a half marathon if we raise $13,100 OR get 131 individual donations of at least $13.10 or more!

Join me and we run toward a world where civic literacy is a pillar of justice, opportunity, and resilience.

What Civic Literacy Means for Our Communities...
In these challenging times, civic literacy is vital. It empowers individuals to be informed citizens, to exercise their rights and responsibilities, and to contribute to shaping their communities. Civic literacy is about more than just knowing how to vote; it’s about understanding the impact of decisions, advocating for change, and making voices heard. My commitment to this run symbolizes our collective belief in a society where everyone can navigate civic systems confidently and powerfully.

Our Vision for Civic Literacy...
At Literacy Minnesota, our mission centers on helping people gain the literacy skills they need to thrive. Civic literacy, in particular, is at the heart of building resilient, engaged communities. Through our civic literacy programs, we work to:

  1. Equip individuals with the knowledge they need to understand policies, community issues, and their rights as citizens.
  2. Mobilize community members to engage in local decision-making processes and advocacy work.
  3. Enable individuals to build connections within their communities, fostering a sense of belonging and shared responsibility.
  4. Provide tools for effective communication with government agencies and community organizations, making self-advocacy possible for everyone.

Each dollar you contribute helps us advance this vision, creating a pathway to a society where people can actively shape the systems that affect their lives.

Why This Run Matters...
My half marathon isn’t just a physical challenge; it’s a testament to the power of civic literacy in action. When you support this fundraising challenge, you’re not just cheering me on; you’re investing in the future of civic literacy in Minnesota and nationally. You’re helping equip individuals to participate confidently in their communities, advocate for themselves, and make informed choices.

How You Can Help Us Reach $13,100...
Your donation is a direct investment in providing individuals with civic knowledge and tools to engage meaningfully in their communities. Whether it’s a dollar for each mile I will run or any amount that feels right to you, every contribution brings us closer to a world where everyone has the confidence and knowledge to participate in shaping their communities.

Together, let’s champion a future where civic literacy is a foundation for engaged, resilient communities. Join us in running towards a brighter, more informed future for all.
