Yams or sweet potatoes? Either way, this darling girl named Yams is an absolute treasure, and she’s incredibly thankful to be out of the impound before Thanksgiving.
At 6 years old, Yams was found as a suspected pregnant stray, abandoned on someone’s front porch. While we don’t believe she’s pregnant, it's clear she has been overbred in the past.
When she arrived at the shelter, Yams was suffering from a severe yeast infection that had left her face swollen and sore. Despite her pain, this gentle girl was a total gem – she only flinched when her face was touched, but even then, her tail kept wagging softly, a testament to her sweet spirit. Now that she’s on antibiotics, her swelling has subsided, and though she still winces a little when touched, her tail never stops wagging. She’s the kind of dog you just can’t help but fall in love with.
Now that Yams is in our care, she’s receiving all her standard vetting. She visited VCA Andover yesterday to begin her treatment. The vet reconfirmed her significant skin infection, and potential mites, which we are continuing to treat with medication. Her left eye is painful, and she’s keeping it closed, making it difficult to fully assess, but we suspect a scratch and have started eye medication. Additionally, all of her canine teeth are fractured, and she will need a dental procedure once she’s stable. We’ll recheck her condition in 7 days and plan to schedule her spay once she’s feeling better.
In the short time Yams has been with us, her foster family has already fallen for her "Winnie the Pooh" personality – loving, calm, and a little bit of a cuddle bug. We can’t wait to see her full personality blossom once she’s feeling better.
Will you make a #GTMD24 gift in honor of Yams? On Give to the Max Day, your donation will be doubled, thanks to $65,000 in matching gifts – and together, we can help give Yams and others like her the happy, healthy lives they deserve!
