Update #1

Update posted 1 month ago

The header photo above was taken in my dye garden this summer. Please help support MCEA's work so that we can make Minnesota a healthy place for all, from people to pollinators!

As I write this, it is days after the disheartening results of the election. It is also more than 6 years into my time working for MCEA, an organization which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Rather than resting on the laurels of our past successes, we are gearing up for what we know will be a time when it is easy to fall into despair, yet vitally important that we resist that urge.

There is much that we cannot change, but I am taking comfort in the knowledge that every day I get to work for an organization that has a long track record of fighting for what we all treasure - clean air and water, and a just, healthy future for all. MCEA has long used multiple avenues to fight for these values, and more than ever, we will need to invest in multiple strategies to meet the struggles that are to come. MCEA will keep fighting in the courts, at the legislature, and beyond.

One example from the past year of MCEA's ability to create real change is the shutdown of Smith Foundry. Smith had been polluting in the Minneapolis neighborhood of East Phillips, a majority BIPOC neighborhood with the highest rates of pollution which cause asthma and other health effects. Their emissions were in

violation of EPA regulations. MCEA came together as part of a coalition of other organizations and neighbors who were able to get the foundry shut down, ending 100 years of pollution.

The majority of our funding comes from individual donors, and every donation, no matter the size, helps to ensure that MCEA will have the resources we need to keep fighting in the courts and at the legislature. In this moment where so much feels like it is out of our control, I am leaning in to what I can do and focusing on what I can change. By investing in MCEA, we can all be a part of creating that better future that we know we can achieve.
