$30,000 goal
States across America are facing so-called "academic freedom" laws or bills that challenge the established science in textbooks and threaten science education. This Giving Tuesday—December 3, 2019—Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society seeks to raise $30,000 to send one-year subscriptions of American Scientist magazine to at least 1,300 schools in vulnerable areas. This would enable the campaign to reach double the number of schools in 2020 as it reached in 2019.
Subscriptions will equip teachers with a supplemental source of evidence-based information to ensure that their teaching resources aren't compromised. Donations raised over the $30,000 goal will be used to send American Scientist subscriptions to more schools.
High schools that will benefit from this campaign are primarily located in the following states:
Alabama
Arkansas
Arizona
Florida
Idaho
Indiana
Iowa
Kansas
Kentucky
Louisiana
Maine
Maryland
Michigan
Mississippi
Missouri
Montana
New Mexico
North Dakota
Oklahoma
South Carolina
