After the introduction is the official statement from Southwest Minnesota Housing Partnership, which beautifully highlights some of the real world work we do. But first, I wanted to explain the Dungeons and Dragons theme
In the world of Dungeons & Dragons (DnD), there’s a mechanic called a long rest—a period of recovery that heals all wounds, restores your abilities, and prepares you to face the challenges ahead. Whether you've battled dragons, died, or been resurrected, a long rest gives you a fresh start. It’s a game-changer.
But here’s the catch: a long rest can only happen in a safe place. If you’re attacked during your rest, you gain no healing—and worse, you suffer exhaustion, which makes everything harder. Your abilities are weakened, and you struggle to succeed.
This is why the long rest mechanic is so powerful. It’s a universal truth, even in a fantasy world: having a safe space to rest and recover is vital. Whether it’s the difference between staying sober or relapsing, succeeding in school or falling behind, or getting the job you need versus being unable to even apply because you don’t have an address, a safe place makes all the difference.
Southwest Minnesota Housing Partnership believes everyone deserves a chance to take a "long rest"—to find stability, recover, and move forward with hope and strength.
That’s why I’m excited to announce Crit to the Max Day, a special fundraiser inspired by this DnD mechanic. It’s my version of Give to the Max Day, with a twist: I contacted Roll 4 Initiative to create custom D20 dice, and anyone who donates $10 or more to our cause will receive one in the mail as a thank-you gift.
Your donation helps provide the safe spaces and resources that allow individuals to heal, grow, and thrive. Just like in DnD, a place to rest can change everything. Together, we can make sure that more people have the opportunity to rest, recover, and roll their own critical successes in life.
Thank you for your support—your generosity truly rolls a natural 20!

Welcome Home!
Some of the sweetest words you might ever hear! And made all the more meaningful by the lived story of someone hearing them:
- The young person with an unstable upbringing who found themselves in and out of treatment programs and incarceration until Solace Apartments gave them the safety net they needed to focus on their recovery and reunify their family
-The multi-generational family who buys their first home, giving everyone their own space to live and play and grow
-The middle-aged man who lost the business he owned during the 2008/2009 recession and began facing health challenges that depleted his savings, who jumped between shelters, sleeping on friends couches and camping until he got into a supportive housing unit.
-The local business whose long-term lease was not renewed but was able to move into a historic storefront that was saved from demolition and preserved for community benefit and use.
-The elderly couple whose home is in disrepair that is able to take advantage of a program to address critical health and safety needs of their home
-The family dealing from the economic aftermath of the global pandemic who is able to utilize foreclosure counseling and save their housing
Supporting the SWMHP this Give to the Max Day allows us to continue providing support to our communities through programs like Solace apartments and other supportive housing, Partnership Community Land Trust, healthy housing and rehab programs, homebuyer counseling, foreclosure counseling, creative community development, etc. Partner with us to create places for people to call home, so that Southwest Minnesota is a place where every person has access to a welcoming home, and every place has a thriving and equitable community.
