Help us make Camp True Colors possible for those needing financial assistance in 2024!
LGBTQ+ young people are under attack in this country and are experiencing hate, stigma and social isolation. LGBTQ+ youth are more than four times as likely to attempt suicide than their peers. It is estimated that more than 1.8 million LGBTQ youth (13-24) seriously consider suicide each year in the U.S. and at least one attempts suicide every 45 seconds. LGBTQ+ young people need and deserve a safe place where they are accepted and celebrated. A place where they can meet others that share similar life experiences. A place where they can just play and experience joy.
One Heartland has been providing camp programs for LGBTQ+ young people since 2010. We continue to expand as the need for this program continues to grow. There are no other LGBTQ+ camps in Minnesota and limited numbers across the US. Camp True Colors is a program specifically for young people identifying as LGBTQ+, including camps specifically for transgender and gender expansive youth.
The need for this program has increased over the past few years and we are grateful to help fill that need. We need YOU to help provide financial assistance to families in need so we can move young people off the waiting list and into camp this summer. With the rising costs of everything from food to transportation, your support is crucial this year to help us welcome as many youth as possible. With your help, we will be able to provide a safe and accepting community where each of our participants are celebrated.
"My child's life is clearly marked in a way of 'before camp true colors and after camp true colors. He went from extremely isolative, depression, anxiety and lack of social connection to being a very active theater member, gaining main roles in multiple plays and musicals. His time at Camp True Colors gave him a sense of belonging and celebration for who he is- which gave him the confidence to go into the world and stay true to himself!
