Built along the steep shores of Lake Superior, Duluth, Minnesota, is spread out over 72 square miles and has a much lower population density than similarly sized cities. This results in challenging conditions for folks seeking food resources; public transit is infrequent outside of the city core, and many neighborhoods are geographically isolated and lack grocery stores. Up to 32% of households in some of the neighborhoods we serve do not have a vehicle, and 48% of neighbors surveyed in our most recent Community Needs Assessment indicated that food access is a challenge.
A Community Action Duluth program launched in the winter of 2021 as a response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Mobile Market works to bring food to low-income home-bound folks and community centers in areas of the city with high barriers to food access. Always growing, the market currently makes 10 stops in 6 unique locations monthly in addition to the weekly home delivery route.
In addition to the Mobile Market, CAD also operates two farmers markets in historically underserved neighborhoods: Lincoln Park and Central Hillside. At the markets, small businesses are connected with EBT participants, who are able to match a $15 swipe, receiving $40 to spend with vendors.
The program also operates the only Deep Winter Greenhouse in Duluth, offering learning opportunities to the adjacent Denfeld High School and welcoming volunteer groups and tours at the expanded greenhouse and urban farm site.
By donating to the Seeds of Success Program, you help ensure fresh food is available to more people who need it most. Not only that, but a donation is also an investment in the local food economy, supporting small producers and a vibrant community gathering space at the markets.
Through May 15th, all donations will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $20,000 thanks to a generous matching donation. Help us reach this goal by donating today!
