George Young was born 4/25/2014 at 2:03am, weighing in at 8lbs even and measuring 21 inches long. Mom and Dad were tired, but he was perfect in every way!
About 12 hours after he was born he started having small ticks on the left side of his body. These small ticks were actually seizures and he was admitted to the NICU that night. He underwent all kinds of testing including a spinal tap, bloodwork, an EEG, and two MRIs before ultimately being diagnosed as having suffered a stroke either at birth or shortly after.
Apparently a stroke at birth occurs in about 1 in 4,000 babies and the cause remains unknown. George continues to thrive and retain all motor function. He has full movement, equal muscle tone, and exhibits normal baby behavior. He went on to spend 12 days in the NICU recovering from the stroke and being monitored for seizure activity. It made bringing him home all that much sweeter.
During his time in the hospital, George's care team included Neonatalogists, Pediatric Neurologists, Radiologists, Hematologists, Occupational and Physical Thereapists, and of course the wonderful nurses that cared for him 24 hours a day.
We cannot say thank you enough to the wonderful people that helped save George's life and give us the amazing little boy we are so deeply in love with.
Please help us give back and help the next family that finds their way to the NICU.
Love,
Ben, April & Baby George
