2019 Foster Care Month Support - This May we're asking you to pay special attention to supporting foster families who open their homes and hearts to kids in crisis. Not everyone can be a foster parent, but we can all be part of the village needed to uplift them in their compassionate and challenging work. Foster families need resources and support to care for the more than 16,600 children and youth in out of home care in MN. "There are lots of "I Love You's" in my house, but it's usually just one-way to start with. Some kids don't think they're worth loving. Sometimes they don't even know what that means." - From a foster parent Caring foster parents are priceless, but it doesn't take much to show you care too! Show you care by donating at our GiveMN fundraising page here. https://bit.ly/2wRS8Ku. You can also help by sharing this post on your own Facebook page. A couple keyboard clicks from you today might help a child in crisis find a safe and supportive home.

Update posted 6 years ago

This month, we pay special attention to supporting foster families who open their homes and hearts to children and youth in need of temporary care when their family is in crisis. Foster parents play a vital role in recognizing the trauma children have experienced and help give them the structure, care, and support they need every day. Foster families need resources and support to care for the more than 16,600 children and youth in out of home care in MN. These families are critical partners in ensuring safety, stability, and well-being of children in care.

How we help

We serve children, birth to 21 years of age, who need a home other than that of their birth parents, and typically have behavioral or emotional issues requiring therapeutic foster care. Extensive support services are provided to assist these children in being successful at home, school and in the community.

Voices of Foster Care

“When I graduated and moved away to go to college it was exciting. At Christmas time I went back to visit my foster parents and it was like coming home.”  - From a youth recently in our foster care program

"There are lots of "I Love You's" in my house, but it's usually just one-way to start with.  Some kids don't think they're worth loving. Sometimes they don't even know what that means." - From a foster parent

"It's really rewarding. I'm giving back to our culture and our community but I'm not a hero. I'm just doing what I know is right. If you don't want a kid breaking into your house and stealing, then BRING them into your house and teach them something!" - From a foster parent

“Everything happens for a reason and I’m so thankful for what the foster parents and the Volunteers of America-MN social worker have done.” —Birth parent of a teenage girl with a history of behavior and mental health issues.
