Hello everyone! We have a few medical cases to share:

First, the long awaited update on Chloe, the lab with juvenile cataracts!

After visiting the ophthalmologist, we learned that Chloe's cataracts are consistent with congenital (inherited) cataracts. Chloe's left eye is currently only 10% affected, and at this time, is not affecting her vision, making that eye not a candidate for surgery. This may or may not progress and will need to be monitored as she ages. However, the cataract in her right eye is occupying 30%-40% of the lens, which is causing her vision to be blurry on this side. She can still see light/dark movement and objects. While Chloe's eye does show some signs of possible reabsorption of the cataract, not preforming the surgery and waiting can run the risk of complications developing, which could make her no longer a candidate for surgery. Cataracts, if not addressed, do have the potential to cause other problems with the eyes called secondary complications. These complications include; development of uveitis (inflammation within the eye), glaucoma (increased pressure within the eye), and retinal detachment. Cataract surgery has the best prognosis when performed prior to the onset of any of these secondary complications. Chloe does not have any signs of active complications in either eye, however there is some evidence of previous inflammation in her right eye due to her iris being a darker color.

Chloe has already been started on an anti-inflammatory drop in her right eye, which will help prepare her for surgery and would also be the medication used following surgery.

The cost for Chloe's initial visit and surgery will be just under $4,000.00

Our next two medical cases are Lil Wayne and Peppin.

Lil Wayne, the senior Shih Tzu, was rescued from a local impound as an unclaimed stray and desperately needs a dental- his teeth are black with bleeding gums and very painful

Peppin, the senior Papillon, was also rescued from a local pound, not reclaimed but clearly was once loved. He has loose teeth and a lot of tarter making eating painful.

The estimated costs for their dentals will be around $500.00 each.
