"...in many ways brkfst shows us the future of dance." -The Minnesota star tribune
The world witnessed as Breaking made it's debut in the 2024 Olympics. This epic display of talent showcased breakers from around the world in a battle competition format. BRKFST Dance Company is paving an alternative path for breakers. As one of only two breaking companies in the United States, BRKFST upholds the values of breaking culture: expression of self, identity and creativity, by creating a space for the dance form to be appreciated by a broader audience base. We strive to be financially secure, allowing BRKFST members the opportunity to make a living while pursuing their creative endeavors.
We are striving to model longevity and sustainability within the dance form through performance and concert dance.
As a company rooted in breaking culture, BRKFST Dance Company is a leader in both content and collaboration. We are proud to be celebrating our 10 year anniversary this year!
Thanks to our generous donors and the funds raised through the GiveMN campaign in the last two years, BRKFST Dance Company has been able to maintain a consistent schedule, paying the dancers for each rehearsal! Because of this, BRKFST members have had the opportunity to prioritize their art making and creative process.
We are proud that in 2024, we (were):
- Awarded a Creative Residency at The National Center for Choreography in Akron, OH and served as Princeton University's Caroline Hearst Choreographer-In-Residence, both of which allowed us ample time to generate material for our most recent production, STORMCLUTTER, which premiered in July 2024 at The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, MN.
- Premiered a new work, Prokofiev's Death of Tybalt, which was performed with Des Moines Symphony at Temple Theater in Des Moines, Iowa
- Invited back to Bates College Dance Festival, Lewiston, Maine to work with dancers in the Pre-professional Training Program, teaching breaking.
This year, BRKFST is asking for your help so that each dancer/choreographer continues to earn a living wage for rehearsals, performances and community engagement opportunities.
In the next year, BRKFST Dance Company will:
- January-February 2025: Tour to Bates College in Maine, performing STORMCLUTTER and creating a new work with students.
- March 2025: Tour to Vancouver International Dance Festival in British Columbia, performing STORMCLUTTER, teaching workshops and engaging with hip hop community through battle competitions.
- April 2025: Host BRKFST's first Intensive Training Program, full scholarships will be available for any individuals in financial need.
- May-August 2025: Initiate BRKFST's first Apprenticeship program, training new dancers in BRKFST technique and methodology.
- September-December 2025: Rehearsal process for upcoming project with invited guests.
Your donation will:
- Strengthen the Minnesota dance community through creative practice, collaboration and dialogue
- Expand BRKFST's outreach, community engagement and exposure to new audiences
- Help BRKFST dancers and choreographers earn a living wage
Reverence in breaking culture is earned by not only mastering the form but also contributing by adding your individuality, flavor, and originality to the dance—these values are the cornerstones of what makes breaking so empowering. It is also the essence and richness of what BRKFST brings to their choreography. The values of discipline, reflection and adaptation contribute their skill level, complementing the physically rigorous and grounded movement of breaking.
Please donate now through GiveMN, a fundraising platform supporting arts organizations in Minnesota during the month of November.
