So what exactly is the MINNESOTA THESPIANS CONFERENCE?

This annual conference is a gathering of high school students and theater educators from across Minnesota where participants watch, do, and learn. The primary purpose is to help foster a statewide community of students who are being prepared for their journey into theater ... whether as a patron, performer, producer, administrator, or technician.

Throughout the conference, students and educators …

  1. Participate in workshops on a variety of theater topics, ranging from stage management to technical theater to acting, dancing, stage combat, improv, and more - led by theater professionals from across the state.
  2. Attend one act performances presented by fellow Thespians, as part of the Chapter Select Contest and the Freestyle Showcase.
  3. Have the opportunity to audition for college representatives at a regional unified audition from theater programs across the state and the Midwest (if attending as Junior or Senior).
  4. Have the opportunity to audition to receive a Thespian Scholarship (Seniors only) to help defray the costs of post-secondary plans.
  5. Learn a new skill and compete in the Tech-a-Thon with others from your school.
  6. Participate in a staged reading of a brand-new, student-written work from the Thespys playwriting winner.
  7. Meet State Thespian Officers and maybe even run for office.
  8. Hear from professional keynote speakers.
  9. Compete and get adjudicated by professionals in Thespys in up to two categories. Perhaps earn the opportunity to perform at the Closing Ceremonies. Categories include:

    - Performance (Acting solo, duo, group; Musical Theater solo, duo, group; Musical Theater Dance solo, duo, group)
    - Playwriting
    - Short Film (Documentary, Animated, all genres)
    - Technical Theater (Costume Design, Costume Construction, Lighting Design, Sound Design, Set Design, Stage Management, Make-up Design)
    - Theater Marketing
  10. Watch some of the selected participants who had superior rankings in the International Thespian Excellence Awards presentations (the Thespys) in Acting, Musical Theater, and/or Technical Theater.
  11. Participate in a lip-synch battle.
  12. Have fun with the Out-of-the-Box trash bag costume contest.
  13. Network and have fun with other like-minded people who love theater just as much!

Send our students to the best theater intensive in Minnesota! We’ve got a dream to take at least 20 students to the annual MINNESOTA THESPIANS CONFERENCE in January 2025 - and we want to make sure finances don’t impede anyone from attending. Our goal is to raise $1,000 during Give to the Max Day 2024 so we can offset registration costs by $50 for each student.

Our burgeoning artists at RAHS need opportunities to learn from professional artists, see the work of other high school thespians, engage with college and university theater programs, apply for college scholarships, and discover new ways to challenge themselves - the MINNESOTA THESPIANS CONFERENCE is all of those things and more!
