Youth Energy Summit

Youth are going to be the people to make the change

YES! started in 2007 as a partnership between Prairie Woods ELC and Southwest Initiative Foundation.  Since then, it has evolved into a collaboration operated by Prairie Woods ELC, Laurentian Environmental Center, Ney Nature Center, and Lakes Country Service Cooperative.  Major funding for the program is provided by the Minnesota Environment and
Natural Resources Trust Fund as recommended by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources, the McKnight Foundation, and Southwest Initiative Foundation.

YES! provides a unique opportunity for students in grades 7 through 12 to learn by engaging directly in community efforts that have led to inspiring results such as:
  • raising $45,000 for energy efficiency improvements at a community theater
  • reducing school electricity costs by $5,000 annually
  • reducing cafeteria food waste by over 50%
  • diverting 125,000 tons of organic waste from the landfill to a local composting facility
  • installing a solar PV system
  • operating a passive solar greenhouse
  • creating a vehicle that achieves 425 miles per gallon
  • educating over 950 community members about ways to save energy and water in their homes
  • and more!
Here is your opportunity to support an initiative that truly gives back to the community.  This Give to the Max day, YES! is looking for support to host Regional Winter Workshops for its teams.  Regional Winter Workshops offer teams an opportunity to learn about energy and environment topics in a hands-on, engaging way.  Workshops are typically accompanied with a tour to a local water treatment facility, recycling center, university, ethanol plant, and more.

Dollars raised from this year's campaign will directly support:
  • Transportation dollars to assist teams in attending the winter workshops
  • Meals for attendees and staff
  • Reservation fees for workshop spaces
  • Speaker fees
Suggested amounts are listed to the right, but any amount is greatly appreciated!
