Help pass along a birding legacy!
Join with others to raise funds to construct a BOG BOARDWALK in the Warren Nelson Memorial Bog. Warren Nelson was one of the birding
pioneers of Aitkin County who guided countless numbers of birders and presented slideshows about the natural world throughout Minnesota. In addition to birds, Warren loved
bogs of all kinds.
In 2015, Warren passed away and hundreds of his friends and members of Friends of Sax-Zim Bog came together to purchase and thereby protect 40 acres of mature black spruce bog in the heart of the Sax-Zim Bog birding area. Since that time, several of us have enjoyed viewing rare bog plants such as Pink Ladyslippers, Bog Solomon's Seal, and Goldthread and listening to warblers and the drumming of Black-backed Woodpeckers in this parcel. However, walking through the property involves a tricky balancing act dancing from hummock to hummock.
In 2016, the Warren Nelson Memorial Bog suffered a severe windfall due to extreme winds in the area. Later in the year, hundreds of black spruce and tamarack seedlings were planted. Now we have an opportunity to raise awareness of this unique bog habitat and provide access for visitors to experience a cathedral-like walk through a bog while protecting the biodiversity of the area.
