Create diversity in our classroom libraries!
Our richly diverse neighborhood school is next to the Dayton’s Bluff Recreation Center on St. Paul’s East Side. As an Achievement Plus school, Dayton’s Bluff is a full-service community school that focuses on raising student achievement. Our school and community partners work together to provide resources that help students and families continue to succeed. In collaboration with our community partners some of the on-site resources include: assistance with basic needs, after-school programming, mentoring, dental services, and mental health services. Students at our school are encouraged by staff to ask questions, solve problems and discover how things work. Our instructional content coach helps students understand their skill level and learn how to monitor their academic growth. With classes in science, art and physical education, each child receives a full day of learning through core academics and other activities. Additionally, families are encouraged to be involved in their student’s educational journey by becoming part of our school community.
As elementary teachers working in a highly diverse school it is important that our classroom libraries and teaching texts reflect the diverse cultures of the students and families we serve. Students begin to build a love for reading when they can relate and make connections with the books they are reading. Multicultural books are not just about heroes and holidays but books that have characters, settings, and situations that children can relate to. Relating and connecting to a book begins to build the foundation for reading comprehension.
