Superior Hiking Trail Association

The Superior Hiking Trail Association (SHTA) is the Minnesota nonprofit that protects, renews, and enhances the Superior Hiking Trail and provides information and education to help thousands of users each year enjoy the Trail. 

The Superior Hiking Trail (SHT) is a 300+ mile footpath that follows the rocky ridgeline above Lake Superior north from the Wisconsin/Minnesota border south of Duluth to the Canadian border. Outdoor enthusiasts come to the Trail to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature while hiking, running, and sauntering to sweeping vistas, along North Shore rivers and streams, and through beautiful Boreal forests. The SHT is easily accessible, with over 60 trailheads and parking lots, and SHTA operates 94 backcountry campsites every 5-10 miles making it ideal for both day hikes, trail running, backpacking, and experiencing nature along the North Shore.

Support our Trail Renewal Program - In 2018, SHTA unveiled our Trail Renewal Program, an initiative that emphasizes:  making the Trail safe to use, raising all 300 miles to modern, sustainable trail standards, minimizing our impact on land and water near the Trail,  ensuring the integrity of the Trail corridor and our partnership with landowners and managers; and elevating our volunteers to continue to make the most of our resources. Your donation today will support these efforts to solve our Trail's biggest problems like:  repairing and replacing treadway, boardwalk, and bridges for safety,  building mindful reroutes to beautiful overlooks, and improving signage to ensure all trail users have a Superior experience on the SHT.
