St. MaryÕs Medical Center is one of several SMDC facilities sponsored by the Benedictine Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery.

In 1888, the Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery opened a small Catholic hospital in Duluth, laying the foundation for St. MaryÕs Medical Center. Under the sistersÕ skilled leadership and sponsorship, St. MaryÕs has become one of MinnesotaÕs largest and most highly specialized medical centers, serving patients from across northern Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. While our hospital services have grown substantially since 1888, our mission has remained virtually unchanged. We are here to witness the love of God by promoting the highest level of physical, emotional and spiritual health and well-being for all people, especially the poor and powerless. Today, our 380-bed medical center offers state-of-the-art care in areas ranging from neurosurgery to heart care and digestive health services. We pride ourselves on our extensive Trauma Services and our Intensive Care Units, which include the regionÕs only pediatric and newborn ICUs. Our commitment to safety, quality and customer service has earned us national recognition. At. St. MaryÕs, we take a team approach to caring for patients and families. Our Collaborative Practice Teams discuss the treatment plans for every patient, every day. This means that everyone involved in your care Ñ from nurses and doctors to chaplains and physical therapists Ñ are on the same page when it comes to your care.
