The primary mission of the St. Boniface Haiti Foundation is to provide health care to the poor of Haiti in the rural area of Fond des Blancs and the surrounding region.
The St. Boniface Haiti Foundation is a non-profit, volunteer organization founded in 1983 by the parishioners of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Quincy, Massachusetts. We are celebrating 25 years of serving the poorest of the poor in rural Haiti. God has guided us every step of the way. In 1983, a delegation from St. Boniface parish traveled to Haiti to bring a modest contribution from a ÒWalk for HungerÓ to Mother TeresaÕs Home for Children in Port-au-Prince. The poverty they encountered in Haiti changed their lives forever. Returning the next year, they were invited to Fond des Blancs by a Belgian priest, Pere Bouello, to visit his parish in rural Haiti. No Americans had been there before. When they met the people and saw the extreme poverty they vowed to come back to help them. In the ensuing years, the effort has grown from an immunization project to a full-service hospital in Fond des Blancs with over 100 employees, which is the only source of healthcare for a population of 250,000 rural poor over 107 square miles. Many walk 20 miles or more for care and in FY 2007-2008, approximately 50,000 patients were seen. In addition to the hospital and healthcare programs we have now expanded into education and community development initiatives. Many have traveled to Haiti with us from all walks of life. All have been touched by the warmth and friendliness of the people. Everyone who helps us serve the poor has truly answered GodÕs call to ÒCome and follow Me.Ó Source: www.haitihealth.org
