We believe that sustainable communities are built through the shared involvement of local people who are empowered to be an integral part of the rebuilding process. With this grassroots approach, SFL enables people devastated by conflict and disaster to become part of the solution.

Mission

The mission of SFL is to demonstrate God's love by enabling children and families affected by conflict and disaster to rebuild their communities and restore their lives, irrespective of religion, gender, ethnicity, and politics. SFL specializes in providing sustainable housing, infrastructure, and community development solutions for internally displaced persons, refugees, ecological migrants, and disaster victims. SFL has 30 years experience in housing and infrastructure projects (schools, clinics, roads, bridges, water supply systems, etc.); disaster mitigation measures; community development; and emergency relief distribution. Cultural sensitivity, community participation, and appropriate technologies are an integral part of our programs.

Programs

SFL is presently serving in Afghanistan, Senegal, Liberia, Iraq and Tajikistan. Previously, SFL has worked in Angola, Burundi, Honduras, Kosovo, India, Indonesia, Iran, Macedonia, and Western Sahara. In this new millennium, more than one million people have benefited from SFL's interventions. During 2000 to 2003 alone, SFL built 12,063 new shelters, 33 schools, 3,864 latrines, 108 wells, repaired 16,576 houses, and constructed 585 km of roads. This year, our team has been focused on constructing roads, building shelters, developing agricultural sectors and providing emergency response. To learn more about our work, head to www.shelter.org
