WHO WE ARE
The Rock 'n' Read Project is the only Minnesota organization that uses brain research about auditory processing to help all young children's brains be ready to read before they reach school! We launch initiatives that use singing and music skills to unlock all children's potential for reading.

HOW WE HELP YOUNG CHILDREN
Research has found that auditory processing is the KEY to reading, and that children who cannot pat a steady beat are likely to struggle with reading. Children who sing and practice basic music skills develop the ability to process and remember sounds, including the sounds of language (phonological awareness). Children who learn to pat a steady beat, clap the rhythm of words, match pitches, and sing in tune will be better readers.

WHAT WE OFFER
We are now focused on helping children become musically fit by age 5.

  1. A free Musical Fitness Assessment for parents and teachers to use with young children
  2. Workshops for early childhood and kindergarten teachers
  3. A Song a Day! Brain Prep for Pre-Readers, 50 short, sequenced lessons for PreK-K children (coming soon from Ventris Learning)
  4. A Research Bibliography of neuroscientific and other studies about the effects of singing and music-making on brain development and achievement

OUR EVIDENCE
Data analysis about Rock 'n' Read Project's results found:

  1. 2500 elementary students made one year (avg.) gain on the MN state reading test (MCA) after using a singing-based software program for 14 hours.
  2. 1st graders with better music skills (on our Musical Fitness Assessment) scored higher (on avg.) on the FastBridge reading assessment.
  3. PreK and K students' basic music skills improved significantly after participating in 50 daily lessons for 10 weeks.
