NorthStar Shih Tzu Rescue exists to rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu blend dogs. We are an all-volunteer organization and operate as a no-kill rescue. An integral part of our mission is to educate our community on the pet overpopulation problem, the importance of spaying/neutering and promoting “Adopt Don’t Shop!”. We also work tirelessly publicizing the plight of companion animals in commercial breeding facilities—also known as puppy mills—and the movement for stricter legislation to regulate the puppy mill industry. Puppy mills contribute to pet overpopulation and cause countless dogs lifetimes of suffering in squalid wire cages. It’s estimated that there are approximately 800,000 dogs being bred in puppy mills, producing 2.4 million puppies a year, making for a billion dollar industry. 99% of the puppies sold by pet stores are from a puppy mill. An estimated 25% of dogs entering shelters originate from puppy mills, contributing to the 4+ million dogs euthanized annually.

We are passionate about rescuing puppy mill dogs--helping them to become real dogs, and also medically needy and senior dogs. We will not turn a dog away for behavior issues, either. We work with excellent behaviorists until the dog is balanced and happy and believe every dog can be rehabilitated. We are truly a No Kill rescue. All of these things come at a high cost, and adoption fees do not begin to cover the expenses. Your generous donation allows us to continue our work and save--and change--lives.
