We seek to provide the finest choral education possible in an environment that challenges and affirms all members, children through adults.

About the NYC: The Northfield Youth Choirs is a great place to sing and a great place to grow up. Since 1986, hundreds of young people have found their voices – and lifelong friends – by singing with these extraordinary choirs.

Singers in grades K through 12, college students, and adults enjoy weekly rehearsals with nationally renowned conductors and music educators, two yearly retreats, area performances, and tours appropriate to their ages and developing voices. Poco: A Music Experience is a non-performing eight-week workshop offered to singers in Kindergarten each semester. The NYC organization’s philosophy can be summed up by the words of Victor Hugo: "Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.”  The NYC believes that the poet Rabelais had it right as well: “A child is a fire to be lit, not a vase to be filled.”  Singers benefit for the rest of their lives from the skills, disciplines, and friendships they acquire in the NYC, and from the fires kindled from within.

Our History:  The Northfield Youth Choirs was founded in 1986 as a single choir for middle school students.  NYC serves more than 150 children in grades K-12 and over 50 adults and college students with seven choirs during the school year and additional summer programming.

Highlights for the group include:

  • A tour to New York City to participate in Manhattan Concert Productions' Children's Choir Series at Carnegie Hall
  • An international tour to the United Kingdom to sing in the International Children's Choir Festival with Henry Leck and David Flood
  • Performing a piece commissioned by the NYC at both the Northfield Sesquicentennial Governors Ball and the 2006 Opening Session of the Minnesota House of Representatives
  • Performing in prestigious venues including: Rockefeller Chapel, Chicago; Canterbury Cathedral, UK; the Basilica of St. Mary, Minneapolis
  • Performing a piece jointly commissioned with the Northfield Arts Guild at the NAG's 50th Anniversary Beaux's Arts Ball.
