Preserving land to protect water is more than our mission – it's our way of life.

What’s at stake

This summer, nine year old Henry, experienced his first taste of “lake life”. The night he arrived on one of our pristine northern lakes, Henry ran down to the water with his dad.

As they stood on the dock in the moonlight, a loon began calling. Henry jumped, looked up at his dad, and asked, “What was that?”. His dad smiled answering, “It’s a loon, buddy.” Henry’s face lit up with recognition. “Oh! Our state bird!” Henry knew what a loon was from school, but he had never actually seen one or listened to its iconic call.

Why we protect these landscapes: so that future generations can experience them firsthand, not just learn about them in books.

Minnesota's Loons

Loons are an iconic symbol of Minnesota’s wild beauty. These majestic birds rely on natural shorelines for nesting, access to abundant fish, and the peace of undisturbed waters. Yet each year, development pressures and habitat loss threaten these essential habitats. As more stretches of shoreline disappear, our lakes, rivers, and the loons that depend on them grow increasingly vulnerable.

Natural Shorelines

Natural shorelines are important for maintaining healthy lakes and rivers. They help prevent bank erosion, absorbing the wave impacts from water recreation and storms. Native plants along the shores act as natural buffers filtering runoff, keeping our waters clean. Natural shorelines also provide habitat for a variety of wildlife such as frogs, turtles, and loons. By protecting our shores, we ensure a balance between the land and water.
