Newborn Foundation

The Newborn Foundation is the only organization of its kind dedicated to leveraging technology innovation to save newborn lives and improve health outcomes for the newest, most vulnerable citizens. The Newborn Foundation was born when one tiny baby in Minnesota was diagnosed at 2 days old with a rare, complex heart condition.  A Minnesota mom rallied the Minnesota Department of Health, medical staff and hospitals to lead the way in changing the way newborn babies are screened for such “hidden” conditions at birth.

We're turning smartphones into lifesaving diagnostic tools that even low-resourced hospitals can use to detect some of the top killers of newborns - congenital heart defects, pneumonia and sepsis.

Every baby in the United States now receives a simple, non-invasive test before discharge -18 million babies and counting. Thousands of little lives have been saved or improved through early diagnosis. The cost: about the same as a diaper change.  

Today, the Newborn Foundation is working in 10 countries around the world to make sure no baby dies a preventable death. We have a single imperative- to leverage technologies and innovations that can improve early diagnosis and access to care for the more fragile babies. What's amazing is that ALL of our projects are piloted and incubated right here in Minnesota first.
