Thank you for your support of New Native Theatre!
We're a new way of looking at, thinking about, and staging Native American stories.
Started in 2009 by playwright, Rhiana Yazzie, NNT has been serving Minnesota's Native community and beyond with authentic and loving stories by and for the Native American community and all of Minnesota. Since becoming a formal non-profit in 2008, we've seen our growth expand exponentially!
More than any other organization in the Upper Midwest, NNT has launched the careers and livelihoods of Native artists locally and nationally. We are a dedicated anti-white supremacist theater and actively fight anti-Blackness with a deep-rooted value system in Native values.
We're more than a conventional theater "painted red," our value system doesn't mimic the harmful practices of urgency, perfectionism, and mainstream concepts of "excellence" that are prevalent in the white American theater. We never use Native art as a cloaked process to assimilate into the commoditization of Native culture; our artists and plays are intricately connected to the concerns and voices of Native communities. NNT’s plays are shorthand meant to be played for its most vital audiences, Native people, because when specific stories are made for the Native community itself, they become undeniably powerful for the broader community too, with no translations required.
More than ever, your tax-deductible gift will make a difference in the livelihoods of Native artists and community members.
Very warmly,
Rhiana Yazzie, Artistic Director
