Making Clean Air Accessible with MN Tool Library
$3,050 Raised
MTL is a cooperative, volunteer-driven nonprofit that offers our community Access Over Ownership.
Our mission is to empower each other, reduce waste, and improve communities by sharing tools, trade skills and shop space.
With the Minnesota Tool Library, there’s no need to rent or purchase costly tools for that DIY project—instead members borrow power tools, landscaping equipment, and much more from one of MTL's local branches. We have thousands of items in our inventory and each loan we make (over 170,000 to date) helps reduce our environmental footprint and saves money that can then be re-invested locally in our homes, businesses and neighborhoods.
We’re more than a lending library though—MTL is a growing network of DIYers, Makers, and Craftspeople who support each other to share skills & knowledge. At our on-site shops (which have large/specialty equipment available like table saws, thickness planers and lathes) members often give each other a hand and offer informal project advice as they build in community. Our instructors provide more formal education through a wide variety of hands-on classes to educate and empower members and guests alike - topics include basic tool use and safety, home improvement project how-to, make/take crafts, and trade skills, among others.
At MTL, we believe Fixing Your Stuff shouldn't be reserved for those few who can afford private maker-spaces, hire-out their home renovations, or have resources at hand to invest in their community. We strive to offer a low-cost (and low-impact) alternative to traditional economic consumption - one that is more equitable and more sustainable. With your support, we are able to provide access at/below cost for our services to all participants and provide extra scholarships for those in need.
MTL offers members and guests a welcoming and non-judgmental environment to try new things and build their skills—whether that individual has never used a tool in their life or is a seasoned tradesperson. Everyone is encouraged to share in our community, and we hope you'll consider supporting our mission.
