Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad - The Duluth River Train

The Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad Company (LS&M RR) is an all-volunteer passenger railroad dedicated to the preservation of railroad history and restoration of railroad artifacts.   

The original LS&M RR into Duluth, MN, was completed on August 1st, 1870.  It was the first railway between Duluth, MN, and St. Paul, MN.

The current LS&M RR was organized in the early 1980s and reserves 5.2 miles of the original railroad right-of-way. With a season stretching from June through October, our excursion train follows the beautiful St Louis River estuary while traveling along the first railroad corridor into Duluth. The railroad operates vintage equipment including a 1946 locomotive, two 1912 coach cars, and a 1928 flat car now outfitted as our "safari" car. These vintage cars provide you with the experience of rail transportation as it was in the 19th Century.  This is a one-of-a-kind railroad experience. 

Although our primary source of income is through passenger fares, we need your help. Our costs, specifically the cost of insurance, has increased exponentially over the past few years. Your donation will be used for insurance, operations, track maintenance, rolling stock, equipment, restoration, and more. 

Our volunteers are the heart of our organization. Running a train takes a crew of many skills. In addition to a donation, you might consider joining the volunteers of the Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad as we continue to prepare for upcoming seasons.
