JDNL's "Check B4U Drive" Safe Driver Program for T1D Teens

The Foundation's core program remains Check B4U Drive - our one day safe driver mini camp for teens with T1D. It's unlike traditional safe driver programs because it's focused on teens with diabetes. It combines advanced driving techniques (provided by professional instructors from the world of motorsports, law enforcement, military, tire and automotive industries) with driving/diabetes discussions led by Certified Diabetic Educators. The day is both serious -- and fun!

Our event brings T1D teens together for a day to learn, drive and make new friends!

Diabetes takes no vacation -- and as a young person reaches driving age, they no longer go to camp, they don't participate as much in walks -- and they don't get a chance to share successes and challenges unless they get a chance to come together as a group.  While Check B4U Drive has a specific purpose, there's great value in a day when about 15 T1D teens can come together.  

We include parents if they wish and they often learn something new from our on-site Certified Diabetes Educator. They talk together about nutrition, health and what to be thinking about as they help their T1D teen transition from pediatric endo care to that of adult endo care.  

We backed up our inaugural Twin Cities event in 2016 with a great program at Dakota County Technical College's on-site driver training road course in 2017. And we continued our long-standing program running in the greater Chicago area.  We are grateful for the support of local law enforcement wherever we go as well as the car dealers who support us.  Apple Chevrolet in Chicago and Jaguar Minneapolis in the Twin Cities!
