Our Mission
Our mission is to sponsor secondary school educations for students in need in Africa. The EFF is dedicated to helping students who want to learn reach their full potential. The foundation works closely with local schools and communities to provide capable students with access to education.
Our History
The Education for the Future Foundation (EFF) was founded as a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization in 2003 by Amy Wehrman and Courtney Gallaher. At the time, Amy and Courtney were undergraduates at the University of Wisconsin and had both recently returned from study abroad experiences in Africa; Amy from Kenya and Courtney from Senegal. Both Amy and Courtney were greatly affected by what they saw and experienced while living in these countries and returned full of energy to try to make a difference in the world.
While in working in rural villages in Kenya and Senegal, Amy and Courtney were able to see and hear firsthand about the importance of education for children who wish to have successful futures and break out of the cycle of poverty that so many families there currently live in. Amy in particular was confronted on numerous occasions by village members who asked for her help in finding sponsors to send their children to secondary school. These villagers recognize the value of an education for their children, but due to the expensive school fees for all secondary schools in Kenya, they were unable to help their children finish their schooling.
After her time spent in Kenya, Amy remained in contact with several individuals who were interested in the idea of starting an organization that would assist needy children in Kenya to help them finish their secondary educations. With input from them and many others, the Education for the Future Foundation was finally established in 2003. One individual, Lucy Openja, has been instrumental in helping the EFF legally establish itself in Kenya. Lucy now serves as the regional director in Kenya and remains in direct contact with the schools and EFF sponsored students. In addition, we are grateful to the help of our dedicated volunteers and interns.
Since 2003, the EFF has continued to grow, and has now sponsored over 50 students. In addition, the EFF has expanded its mission and now coordinates two additional projects; Kila Nafasi sponsors high school for Maasai girls in Kenya, and the Bodo Initiative sponsors girls from Bodo village on the coast of Kenya.
