At Clare Housing, we want every Minnesotan living with HIV – no matter their race, gender, or sexuality – to have a safe and stable place to call home in our community.

The HIV epidemic isn’t over. Despite amazing progress in treatment and prevention, there are new infections diagnosed every day, and there is no cure.  Here in the Twin Cities, HIV cases are on the rise, particularly affecting people experiencing homelessness.

Medications taken daily can reduce the amount of HIV in a person’s blood to the point where it is undetectable and it means that HIV is no longer transmittable. Getting and keeping an undetectable viral load is the best way for people living with HIV to stay healthy and protect others.

For over 35 years, Clare Housing has been providing affordable supportive housing to low-income people living with HIV, housing more than 300 people each year. Safe, stable housing is essential to improving health and well-being, making it possible to do things like keep healthcare appointments and take medications regularly.

The stigma around HIV creates massive barriers to housing, especially for people who experience other kinds of discrimination every day. Out of every 10 Clare Housing residents, 6 have experienced homelessness prior to being housed at Clare Housing, 7 have a mental health condition, and 3 have a criminal history.

Stable housing and 24/7 individualized support make a big difference in the lives of our residents. Residents say they have been able to do things like get sober, reconnect with family, volunteer, get a job, or start taking essential medications because of the stability they now have.

Through permanent supportive housing, we work to build an intentional healing community where all residents feel heard, respected, and find the support they need to improve their health and overall quality of life.
