Churches United: Here for Every Neighbor

Churches United's mission is to provide safe shelter, stable housing, nutritious food, and a path toward healing for our neighbors in need.

Since 1987, Churches United has provided shelter and support for men, women, and families struggling with homelessness. Since our merger with the Dorothy Day organization in 2019, Churches United now serves our neighbors in six locations.

Micah's Mission is our largest shelter at 1901 1st Ave N in Moorhead. This shelter houses men, women and families, up to 110 each evening. It is the only shelter in 250 miles where fathers can stay with their families. We offer resources to help guests find a home, self-sufficiency, and a supportive community. We are committed to carrying out this work in the spirit of love, grace, hospitality, and service.

Dorothy Day House shelters 15 men each evening. During winter, there are 3 sofas that serve as overflow. Laundry and showers are available to anyone in the community each day from 9am-3pm. Each evening, dinner is served family style.

Safe Haven shelters 27 women each evening. The shelter is for women who are not accompanied by children.

The Bright Sky Apartments contain 43 units of permanent supportive housing. Folks who live there have been homeless for at least a year and have a disabling issue. Many of these people have not had a home in many years. All residents have leases, pay rent, and have Case Management to help them with barriers to housing.

In 2023, we will begin construction on the Silver Linings Apartments. These apartments will contain 36 units of permanent supportive housing for seniors (55+) who have experienced chronic homelessness.

Dorothy Day Food Pantry Moorhead is a consumer-choice model pantry where people can pick out of the 4 food groups.  It was improved to a Super Shelf model in November of 2019.  A Super Shelf model includes more healthy options and people are able to shop like a grocery story. This pantry distributed over a half a million pounds of food to over 20,000 people in 2021.

Dorothy Day Food Pantry West Fargo is one of the largest food pantries in North Dakota, and the largest fresh food pantry in the FM area. It is currently a distribution site where people pick up prepared boxes of food depending on size of household. In August 2021, it opened at a new location at 45 21st Ave E Unit A in West Fargo. This pantry distributed over 1.2 million pounds of food in 2021.

All those experiencing homelessness at Churches United have Case Managers who help guide them into safe and affordable housing. All have access to 2 shelter nurses. All have support of advocates who help provide for daily needs such as diapers, laundry detergent, hygiene products and a listening ear as they adjust to community in the shelters and apartments

Thanks to donations, volunteers, and support from so many people like you, Churches United has increased the number of people served each day from 210 to 465. These aren’t just nameless faces. These are our friends and neighbors in crisis who need our help. In 2023, Churches United will continue to meet the needs of people through safe shelter, nutritious food, stable housing, and a path towards healing. In Moorhead, there are no other shelters except ours.

Your gifts and donations are changing lives! Thank you for being a part of the success stories for so many!
