Camp Breakaway is a local non-profit organization that provides a free medically supervised overnight camping experience for children ages 7-17 with cancer or life-threatening blood disorders and their siblings. Camp is held for five days/four nights during the summer and is primarily volunteer-run and community funded. The core committee that plans and carries out camp is led by several board members that have been heavily involved in this camp for many years.

Our camp provides all the experiences of a typical summer camp, including swimming, hiking, arts and crafts, campfires and cookouts, pontoon rides, archery, and horseback riding! We also partner with local organizations, who come to camp to provide our campers with the opportunity to learn and explore art, dance, sports, and nature.

Our camp is available to all current childhood cancer and life-threatening blood disorders patients, as well as to survivors who have successfully completed their treatment. Camp Breakaway is open to any patients being treated at a children’s hospital in Minnesota.

Our camp offers patients and their siblings a unique opportunity to experience these activities with others like them who understand what it is like to live with cancer or a life-threatening blood disorder. It also affords parents the rare chance to have time away from their children, knowing that they are safely cared for by our pediatric hematology-oncology-trained medical team.

Camp Breakaway was featured in CBS News Minnesota segment, follow the link to see our mission in action:   Camp Breakaway in the news.
