Birthright provides a loving and personal response to any woman distressed over her pregnancy. Its guiding principal, “It is the right of every pregnant woman to give birth…and the right of every child to be born.” is an affirmation of the value of each life and an inspiration to remove the barriers a woman may face in bringing her child into the world. It has worked in the Fargo-Moorhead area since 1972.
It is interdenominational and helps anyone, regardless of age, race, and creed, marital or financial status. It is not a political group.
Birthright cares for every woman and baby and does not pass judgment on the “quality” of life or circumstances of a pregnancy. It does not dwell on the past, but focuses on what is needed to do in the present and how we can help. No matter how difficult a situation may seem, Birthright tries to help each woman plan constructively for her future and the future of her baby. At Birthright, we hope to communicate “We love them both.”
In our effort to be responsive to the needs of the women who come to us, we need to be open to change. Some of the services we provided in the early years of our group are not requested as often today. In the 1970’s and 1980’s, we did many pregnancy tests and served many young unmarried women. With pregnancy tests easily available in drug stores and the social stigma an unmarried pregnant women may have experienced in those days now lessened, we find other services are more frequently needed, especially the need for diapers formula, and baby clothes.. The largest number of women who come to us are over age thirty and almost half of our clients are married. We believe it is poverty that is the single greatest barrier for those experiencing an untimely pregnancy. All services are free and confidential.
