A Breath of Hope Lung Foundation (ABOH) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting lung cancer.

We are thrilled to announce a $100,000 matching gift. Your gift will be matched dollar for dollar by one of our generous families, who wish to remain anonymous.

Changing and Saving Lives. Lung cancer is the number one cause of cancer death in the world with a survival rate of just 26.6%. On average, 229,000 individuals in America will be diagnosed with lung cancer–and 74% of new cases will be diagnosed in stage 3 or 4 when it is difficult to treat. Despite these staggering statistics, lung cancer receives less funding dollars per cancer death than other cancers, and Americans still believe it only happens to smokers - a stigma that is untrue and unhelpful.

However, there’s hope. 

Since its incorporation in 2008, ABOH has implemented programs that have moved the needle in the U.S. lung cancer survival rate, including a focus on funding translational research, empowering patients with education and support services, driving earlier detection, and encouraging adherence to biomarker testing guidelines to make sure each patient receives the optimal treatment.

Making a difference. Each year, A Breath of Hope reaches nearly 20 million Americans with life-saving public education and more than 100,000 people living with lung cancer, including patients, survivors, families, and caregivers. ABOH offers online patient education that breaks down literacy barriers (youandlungcancer.com), virtual and free patient/survivor/family/caregiver support groups (including grief support groups), companionship services, experiential survivorship programming (abreathofhope.org/patient support), and in-person transportation services for patients living in Minneapolis or St. Paul, Minnesota. 

Additionally, ABOH funds innovative research which has led to major scientific findings published in top US medical journals.

Annually, ABOH hosts events that increase community-wide awareness and access to resources, break down barriers, and connect people with similar experiences, including the Women’s Wellness Tea, Lung Run/Walk, Midwest Patient Summit, Biomarker Summit for providers, and the Shining Bright Gala.

Your gift will support the following programs: 

Patient and family support services including transportation for Minnesota lung cancer patients and caregivers to medical appointments, peer-to-peer companionship services, patient/survivor/caregiver/family support groups, grief groups, and survivorship classes such as yoga, mindfulness, and physical activity to decrease stress and improve health outcomes. 

Research funding for America's top lung cancer projects and early career researchers
