Serving Metro Deaf School in Pursuing Excellence in Deaf Education!

Metro Deaf School opened its doors to Deaf,Hard of Hearing and DeafBlind students seeking quality Deaf Education in 1993. It was one of the original charter schools to open following the first charter school law passed in the nation by Minnesota in 1992. Part of that legislation required charter schools to rent facilities, never to own their own property. Over the years, this has proved to be a challenge to charter schools’ stability, as landlords choose to use their properties for different means and ask schools to leave. Metro Deaf School, during its 24 year history, has operated in 3 different locations.

In 2006, with Metro Deaf School’s stability in mind, 1House 2Hands Inc was established with the purpose of finding, purchasing and maintaining a long term home for Metro Deaf School. 1House 2Hands Inc purchased a building at 1471 Brewster Street St Paul, renovated it and began leasing it to Metro Deaf School in 2007. It has served Metro Deaf School well for the last decade and the school has thrived as a result.

1House 2Hands is made up of a group of volunteers. There are no paid staff. Some services are contracted out in order to show fiduciary responsibility. As a result, administrative cost for this organization is very low, leaving over 99% of funds received going directly to its mission to serve Metro Deaf School.

As Metro Deaf School has grown over the last 10 years, now serving students 2.5 to 21 years of age, the school is beginning to experience limitations to its program due to the size of its current building. Hearing these concerns, 1House 2Hands is once again looking for a new larger facility that can serve the school well into the future. Your donations can help support Metro Deaf School reach  more children in the Twin Cities metro and western Wisconsin.
