We are small, but we are strong and determined

We are a small foster-based German Shepherd Dog (GSD) rescue providing safety, shelter, and love to GSDs and GSD mixes in need. Saving Shepherds of MN receives dogs from owners and shelters, both locally and across the United States. If we can help, we do!

Major medical cases don't slow us and our supporters down!

  • Buddy was found terrified at a gas station, he was laying behind it, pancaked to the ground. Too scared to move, he had to be picked up and carried. Everything scared him. We brought him to a fantastic foster home that allowed him to take life at his own speed. Decompress and learn how to be a dog. He is now a happy boy and his foster family became his forever family!
  • Margo was seen running with other dogs along a country road, and then it happened…she was hit by a car. The car never stopped and she was nowhere to be found. For 2 weeks volunteers looked for her, until one day she was seen laying in a field. Cold, scared, hungry and hurt. She was taken to the vet, where she received surgery on her hip. She is now a beautiful, happy girl who loves life!
  • When we saw Rally, we saw a boy that was clinging to life. Starved almost to the point of no return. But he had a will to survive and we had a will to save him. We ‘rallied’ our supporters and all the strength he had to survive! His recovery was nothing short of a miracle! In record time, he turned into a handsome shepherd, with energy to spare! He is living his best life now and we could not be happier!
  • Just when we thought we’d seen the worst with Rally, Etana’s pictures were sent to us. With tears in our eyes, we said, ‘absolutely we will save her!’ She was the worst we’ve seen. She was emaciated, with almost no fur on her entire body, her skin thickened from infection, her nails so long they curled and the worst part….she wasn’t even a year old! This poor girl had never known kind words, soft hands, consistent meals and true vet care. But our fosters know how to do all of those things and she blossomed into a gorgeous girl with personality plus!! She is now in her forever home, being spoiled like she always deserved to be!
  • Lenny is in our ‘puppy protection’ program, so you haven’t heard about him. His owner was trying to take his life at only a few months old. We stepped in and because of the trauma (mental) he endured, he was sent to our trainers. He is now the very best version of himself! He is a happy, healthy, dog, cat, people friendly puppy that just wants to be loved!  He is currently looking for his forever!
  • And Asher was seen running for WEEKS, but no one could catch him. Like a ghost, his once white coat, now turned grey would disappear into the trees if anyone tried to get close. Then it was noticed, he was not using one of his legs, he was hurt and needed immediate help. He seemed to know it and jumped right into a car that stopped. With open arms Asher came to us. He is still recovering both physically, but mostly mentally from what he has been through. We will give he all the time he needs, because that’s what he deserves.

SSOMN partners with professional trainers to help our dogs become well-adjusted family members. Often, the dogs that come to our rescue have limited training or none at all. Some are under-socialized and exhibit behavior issues that make them more difficult to adopt out or more at risk to be returned to us or dumped at a shelter.

SSOMN has saved a total of 760 dogs in our seven years of saving this beautiful breed!

As with many rescues, we run 100% on donations. Saving Shepherds of MN relies on the generosity of others with their time, talent, and monetary support. We absolutely could not do this alone and we want to thank our supporters from the bottoms of our hearts.
