Since 2008, the Kako Foundation has sponsored music programs that empower, uplift, and nurture creativity among youth in Haiti and Duluth. Established in 2008 to honor the life of Kareem Xavier Gaspard (Kako), a gifted 16-year-old Haitian musician whose life was tragically cut short by violence, the Kako Foundation has provided opportunities for hundreds of young people in Haiti and Duluth to learn to play instruments, sing, perform, and explore nature.
I became involved in this organization because I know the arts have the power to heal and inspire hope. As a Kako Foundation Board member, I have seen the amazing progress of young Haitian musicians who are learning to play instruments for the first time. In Duluth, I have worked directly with children involved in the Kako's Choir, Hiking in Harmony, and That's a Rap! programs. What a joy it has been to witness children expressing themselves through song, verse, melody, and rhythm!
