Did you know that food is the single largest municipal waste source? It makes up 20% of landfill weight and generates 58% of landfill methane emissions in the U.S. At the Brass Tacks Initiative we are working to change these statistics!

The Brass Tacks Initiative is a 501c3 nonprofit founded on a mission to support sustainable practices in the food stream through research, education, and collaboration. We believe that by working together, we can create a more sustainable future for our communities. Over the past year, we have achieved some significant milestones that we are excited to share with you!

We kicked off the summer by partnering with Scott County libraries. BTI created take-home compost education kits which included engaging activities for families to learn about composting and food waste. These kits reached over 1,200 households.

Throughout the year, we provided support and marketing material for the New Prague Household Organic site. We utilized brochures, posters, social media, and word of mouth to spread awareness and foster community engagement.

Our team also conducted presentations for various organizations, sharing valuable insights and practical tips on how to improve the sustainability of their food stream. Additionally, we set up booths at local events, creating opportunities to engage with the wider community and promote sustainable practices.

However, there is much more work to be done, and we need your support to continue ourBTI Executive Director at an event in Elko-New Market, 2023.mission! By donating to The Brass Tacks Initiative, you can help us make an even greater impact. Your contribution will directly support our efforts in conducting research, organizing educational programs, and fostering collaboration among individuals, organizations, and communities.

Here's how you can help:

  1. Make a donation: Your generous support enables us to continue our mission. Together, we can nurture a sustainable food stream for future generations.
  2. Share our story: Spread the word to friends, family, and colleagues. Encourage them to explore our mission and the positive changes we're making. Together, we can create a ripple effect that reaches far and wide.
  3. Volunteer with us: We are always in need of dedicated individuals who are passionate about sustainable food practices. By joining our team of volunteers, you can directly contribute to creating a positive impact in your community.

Your support means the world to us and will help us create a better future for generations to come.
