The Northrup King Building in Minneapolis has been a longstanding hub for artists and is currently undergoing major redevelopment to enhance its role in the Northeast Minneapolis arts community. The redevelopment includes the conversion of two buildings into 84 affordable live-work apartments, with rental rates designed to be accessible to artists earning 30–80% of the area median income. This transformation preserves the building's artistic heritage while adding more housing options for creatives in an area that has faced rising rents and gentrification pressure
Funding for the project has been sourced through a mix of city and state grants, as well as support from private organizations like U.S. Bank and the National Endowment for the Arts. Along with residential units, the complex will feature new arts spaces and improved landscaping, including native plantings and green spaces to make the site more welcoming. The first phase of construction is set to start soon, focusing on restoring the building's original industrial charm and integrating community amenities like galleries and studios
