We use tennis to teach leadership and life skills and create positive change in the lives of 2,000+ kids each year.
Help us reach our goal of $5,000 by November 16th, 2017!
Saint Paul Urban Tennis (SPUT) began in 1991 to level the playing field for underserved kids in St. Paul’s low-income neighborhoods. Our founding principle is to serve all school children K -12, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, abilities or economic background. During the past 26 years, more than 49,000 school children (2,500+ each year) have participated in our lessons and camps at nearly 50 sites throughout St. Paul. SPUT uses the game of tennis to support children’s neuromuscular development and teach them essential life skills needed to succeed in school and life. Our SPIRIT curriculum teaches Service, Perseverance, Imagination, Responsibility, Integrity and Teamwork. A reading component is woven into summer lessons for ages 5-8, to help combat the Summer Slide.
We know that for many families transportation can be an issue. To ensure access for all kids we bring our programs to where the kids live-- schools, parks, recreation centers, apartment complex parking lots--wherever we can teach and impact kids. No child has ever been turned away due to their family’s inability to pay. In 2016, SPUT offered more than $150,000 in financial assistance for our programs. SPUT recently moved its offices to the east side of St. Paul, where the need is great to expand programming for low income families.
Developing leaders is also an important SPUT focus. Our coaches live in the neighborhoods where they teach, and many grew up in our programs. They are powerful role models for younger kids. Training our teen participants to be coaches allows us to provide a full youth development program, culminating in SPUT's Warrior Leadership Academy for low income high school students. 2016-17, 50+ students participated in educational workshops on college and career decision-making and public speaking, and in service opportunities offered through SPUT and other community organizations.
With the generous support of our donors, St. Paul kids are learning to be winners on and off the tennis court. Thank you for considering a contribution to help SPUT kids!
